Introduction

How to choose the right Spanish visa

Spain has a different visa for each reason to move: to work remotely, to live on your savings, to study or to take a job. The right one depends on where your income comes from, how long you want to stay and whether you are already in Spain.

Some visas can be requested from Spain during a legal stay; others only at the Spanish consulate in your country. Choosing the wrong route is one of the most common reasons for losing months.

Where your income comes from

Remote work for foreign clients, a Spanish employer, savings and pensions or a scholarship each lead to a different visa.

Where you apply from

The Digital Nomad and Highly Qualified visas can be requested from Spain; the Non-Lucrative Visa only at the consulate.

Your family

Most residence visas let your spouse or partner and children come with you, with extra income for each of them.

Requirements

What almost every Spanish visa asks for

  • Valid passportWith enough validity for your stay and copies of all its pages.
  • Criminal record certificateFrom the countries where you have lived in recent years, legalised or apostilled and translated into Spanish.
  • Proof of income or meansBank statements, contracts, invoices or pension certificates, depending on the visa.
  • Health insurancePublic coverage or a private policy valid in Spain, depending on the visa.
  • Official forms and feesThe application form for your visa and the government fee.

Most refusals come from paperwork, not from the applicant: documents without a valid apostille, unsworn translations, contracts that do not say what the law requires or income just below the minimum. We check all of this before you apply.

FAQ

Spanish visas: FAQ

Can't find your question? Ask us in a call — we'll look at your specific situation.

Which Spanish visa is easiest to get?

There is no easiest visa: it depends on your situation. If you work remotely for clients or companies outside Spain, the Digital Nomad Visa is usually the best route. If you live on savings or a pension, the Non-Lucrative Visa. If you have a job offer, the work or Highly Qualified visas.

Can I apply for a visa from Spain?

Some permits can be requested from Spain during a legal stay, such as the Digital Nomad Visa, the Highly Qualified Visa and, in some cases, the Student Visa. The Non-Lucrative Visa can only be requested at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence.

Can I work with a Non-Lucrative Visa?

No. The Non-Lucrative Visa does not allow you to work in Spain, not even remotely for foreign companies. If you want to work remotely, the Digital Nomad Visa is the right option.

Can my family come with me?

Yes, with most residence visas your spouse or partner and children can apply with you. You need to show extra income or savings for each family member.

Why are Spanish visa applications refused?

The most common reasons are income below the minimum, documents without a valid apostille or legalisation, missing sworn translations and employment contracts that do not include what the law requires.

What happens after my visa is approved?

You must apply for your TIE (foreigner identity card) within one month of entering Spain or of your permit being approved. We book the appointment for you.

Do I need a lawyer to apply?

No, you can apply yourself. But many refusals come from small paperwork errors. If you prefer to apply on your own, our document review checks your file before you submit it.

I had an amazing experience working with NIM Extranjería on my student permit extension. I worked with Carmen in particular, and she was absolutely fantastic throughout the entire process. She was always available, incredibly responsive, and provided clear, expert guidance at every step. Her support made what could have been a stressful situation feel smooth and manageable. I highly recommend NIM Extranjería—and especially Carmen—for anyone needing reliable and professional immigration assistance.

I cannot say enough good things about this team! From the very beginning, Carmen has been extremely helpful throughout my entire DNV process, staying on top of all my appointments and always answering my many, many questions quickly. Working with NIM Extranjeria has made this process so much smoother than it ever would have been if I tried handling everything on my own, and I am so appreciative of their service and attention. I would highly recommend working with them!
