Requirements

Digital Nomad Visa requirements for UK Citizens

  • Remote work for companies outside SpainAt least 3 months working with your company or clients before applying, and a company letter authorising remote work from Spain.
  • Minimum income200% of the Spanish minimum wage: about €2,849 a month in 2026 (€1,221 × 14 payments ÷ 12, doubled), plus about €1,068 for the first family member and €356 for each additional one.
  • Degree or 3 years of experienceA university or business-school qualification, or at least 3 years of professional experience in your field.
  • Criminal record certificateAn ACRO Police Certificate covering the UK, apostilled by the FCDO Legalisation Office and translated by a sworn translator. Consulates usually want it issued in the last 6 months.
  • Social Security and health insuranceEither an HMRC certificate (form CA3822 for employees or CA3837 for the self-employed) that keeps you in UK National Insurance, or registration with Spanish Social Security. Plus health insurance valid in Spain.

Since Brexit, UK documents need a Hague apostille from the FCDO Legalisation Office — the ACRO certificate, your degree and your company documents. We confirm the current figures and your consulate's exact checklist before you apply.

Applying from the UK or from Spain

From the UK, you apply in person at the visa centre for the Spanish consulate that covers your area (London or Edinburgh), by appointment. The London consulate asks for your NIE number before you apply, and non-British residents need a valid UK residence permit.

Since Brexit, UK citizens can stay in Spain visa-free for 90 days in any 180. During that legal stay you can apply for the residence permit from Spain: the decision takes about 20 working days and the permit lasts up to 3 years.

Your ACRO certificate, step by step

Apply online to ACRO for a Police Certificate. Then get it apostilled by the FCDO Legalisation Office and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.

If you have lived in another country in recent years, you may also need that country's certificate. You also sign a declaration that you have no criminal record in the last 5 years.

Social Security: the HMRC certificate

Under the UK–EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement, many UK workers can stay in UK National Insurance while working from Spain. HMRC issues the certificate: form CA3822 if you are an employee and CA3837 if you are self-employed.

With that certificate you don't register with Spanish Social Security. If you can't get it, your employer registers in Spain or, as a freelancer, you register as self-employed (autónomo).

Taxes for Britons in Spain

If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain you will usually become a Spanish tax resident. The UK–Spain tax treaty decides where each type of income is taxed and prevents double taxation.

Many digital nomads can opt for the Beckham Law and pay a flat 24% on their employment income in Spain for up to six years. Read our Digital Nomad Visa tax guide.

Why applications are refused

In our experience, most refusals come from three problems that can be avoided with good preparation:

Not meeting the minimum income. Your income must reach the current threshold — including the extra amount for each family member — and be proven with payslips, contracts, invoices or bank statements.

Apostilles and legalisations done wrong. Your criminal record, company documents and civil certificates must carry the right apostille and a sworn Spanish translation. A missing or wrong apostille can sink a whole application.

Badly drafted employment contracts. The contract or company letter must clearly state remote work from Spain, the start date of the relationship and the salary. Vague or generic letters are one of the most common reasons for refusal.

FAQ

Digital Nomad Visa for UK Citizens: FAQ

Can't find your question? Ask us in a call — we'll look at your specific situation.

Do UK citizens need a visa to live in Spain after Brexit?

Yes. Since Brexit, UK citizens can only stay 90 days in any 180 without a visa. To live and work remotely from Spain you need a permit such as the Digital Nomad Visa.

Which police certificate do I need?

An ACRO Police Certificate, apostilled by the FCDO Legalisation Office and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.

Can I keep paying UK National Insurance?

Often, yes. HMRC can issue a certificate (CA3822 for employees, CA3837 for the self-employed) that keeps you in the UK system while you work from Spain.

Can I apply from Spain?

Yes. During your legal 90-day stay you can apply for the residence permit from Spain and receive a permit for up to 3 years.

How much income do I need in 2026?

About €2,849 a month for the main applicant, plus about €1,068 for the first family member and €356 for each additional one. Some consulates publish lower figures; we prepare your file for the higher threshold so it is not questioned.

Can I work for Spanish clients?

Employees must work for companies outside Spain. Freelancers can work for Spanish companies, as long as that work is no more than 20% of their total professional activity.

Can my family come with me?

Yes. Your spouse or partner, children and dependent parents can apply with you or later, and they can work in Spain.

Why are applications refused?

The most common reasons we see are income below the minimum, apostilles or legalisations done incorrectly, and contracts or company letters that don't clearly state the remote work conditions.

I had an amazing experience working with NIM Extranjería on my student permit extension. I worked with Carmen in particular, and she was absolutely fantastic throughout the entire process. She was always available, incredibly responsive, and provided clear, expert guidance at every step. Her support made what could have been a stressful situation feel smooth and manageable. I highly recommend NIM Extranjería—and especially Carmen—for anyone needing reliable and professional immigration assistance.

I cannot say enough good things about this team! From the very beginning, Carmen has been extremely helpful throughout my entire DNV process, staying on top of all my appointments and always answering my many, many questions quickly. Working with NIM Extranjeria has made this process so much smoother than it ever would have been if I tried handling everything on my own, and I am so appreciative of their service and attention. I would highly recommend working with them!
