Requirements

Digital Nomad Visa requirements for Australians

  • Remote work for companies outside SpainAt least 3 months working with your company or clients before applying, and a company letter authorising remote work from Spain.
  • Minimum income200% of the Spanish minimum wage: about €2,849 a month in 2026 (€1,221 × 14 payments ÷ 12, doubled), plus about €1,068 for the first family member and €356 for each additional one.
  • Degree or 3 years of experienceA university or business-school qualification, or at least 3 years of professional experience in your field.
  • Criminal record certificateAn Australian Federal Police National Police Check (consulates may ask for a fingerprint-based check), apostilled by DFAT and translated by a sworn translator.
  • Social Security and health insuranceRegistration with Spanish Social Security, or a certificate from the Australian authorities if the Australia–Spain Social Security agreement applies to you. Plus health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain.

Australian documents need an apostille from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) — the police check, your degree and your company documents (such as the Australian Business Register certificate). We confirm the current figures and your consulate's exact checklist before you apply.

Guide for Australians

Applying from Australia or from Spain

From Australia, you apply in person at the Spanish embassy or consulate that covers your state: Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne. You need your NIE number before applying, and non-Australian residents need a valid Australian visa.

Australians can also enter Spain visa-free for 90 days in any 180 and apply for the residence permit from here. The decision takes about 20 working days and the permit lasts up to 3 years.

Your AFP police check, step by step

Apply to the Australian Federal Police for a National Police Check. Some Spanish consulates ask for a fingerprint-based check, so we confirm which one your consulate wants before you order it.

Then have it apostilled by DFAT and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator. If you have lived in other countries in the last 5 years, you may also need their certificates.

Social Security for Australians

Australia and Spain have a Social Security agreement. In some cases the Australian authorities can issue a certificate that covers you temporarily while you work from Spain; the consulate asks you to confirm with them whether it applies to you.

If it doesn't, your employer registers with Spanish Social Security or, as a freelancer, you register as self-employed (autónomo). Your Australian Medicare does not cover you in Spain, so you also need health insurance valid here.

Taxes for Australians in Spain

If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain you will usually become a Spanish tax resident. Australia and Spain have a tax treaty that prevents you from paying twice on the same income.

Many digital nomads can opt for the Beckham Law and pay a flat 24% on their employment income in Spain for up to six years. Read our Digital Nomad Visa tax guide.

Why applications are refused

In our experience, most refusals come from three problems that can be avoided with good preparation:

Not meeting the minimum income. Your income must reach the current threshold — including the extra amount for each family member — and be proven with payslips, contracts, invoices or bank statements.

Apostilles and legalisations done wrong. Your criminal record, company documents and civil certificates must carry the right apostille and a sworn Spanish translation. A missing or wrong apostille can sink a whole application.

Badly drafted employment contracts. The contract or company letter must clearly state remote work from Spain, the start date of the relationship and the salary. Vague or generic letters are one of the most common reasons for refusal.

FAQ

Digital Nomad Visa for Australians: FAQ

Can't find your question? Ask us in a call — we'll look at your specific situation.

Which police check do Australians need?

An Australian Federal Police National Police Check, apostilled by DFAT and translated into Spanish. Some consulates ask for a fingerprint-based check, so we confirm this first.

Where do I apply in Australia?

At the Spanish embassy in Canberra or the consulates in Sydney or Melbourne, depending on the state where you live. You can also apply from Spain during a legal stay.

Does Medicare cover me in Spain?

No. You need health insurance valid in Spain, unless you are registered with Spanish Social Security or covered by a certificate under the Australia–Spain agreement.

Is the consular fee higher for Australians?

Visa fees depend on your nationality and change regularly, and they are higher for some nationalities, including Australians. We confirm the current fee for your consulate before you apply.

How much income do I need in 2026?

About €2,849 a month for the main applicant, plus about €1,068 for the first family member and €356 for each additional one. Some consulates publish lower figures; we prepare your file for the higher threshold so it is not questioned.

Can I work for Spanish clients?

Employees must work for companies outside Spain. Freelancers can work for Spanish companies, as long as that work is no more than 20% of their total professional activity.

Can my family come with me?

Yes. Your spouse or partner, children and dependent parents can apply with you or later, and they can work in Spain.

Why are applications refused?

The most common reasons we see are income below the minimum, apostilles or legalisations done incorrectly, and contracts or company letters that don't clearly state the remote work conditions.

I had an amazing experience working with NIM Extranjería on my student permit extension. I worked with Carmen in particular, and she was absolutely fantastic throughout the entire process. She was always available, incredibly responsive, and provided clear, expert guidance at every step. Her support made what could have been a stressful situation feel smooth and manageable. I highly recommend NIM Extranjería—and especially Carmen—for anyone needing reliable and professional immigration assistance.

I cannot say enough good things about this team! From the very beginning, Carmen has been extremely helpful throughout my entire DNV process, staying on top of all my appointments and always answering my many, many questions quickly. Working with NIM Extranjeria has made this process so much smoother than it ever would have been if I tried handling everything on my own, and I am so appreciative of their service and attention. I would highly recommend working with them!
