Introduction

Do digital nomads pay tax in Spain?

Usually, yes. If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain, or your main economic interests are here, you become a Spanish tax resident and pay tax on your worldwide income. The good news: as a new resident you may qualify for the Beckham Law.

Remote employees

Employees of foreign companies can often choose the Beckham Law and pay 24% on their salary.

Freelancers

Self-employed nomads pay income tax and register as autónomos, with quarterly returns.

Families

Your partner and children can also benefit from the Beckham regime in some cases.

When do you become a Spanish tax resident?

You are a Spanish tax resident if you spend more than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year, or if your main business or economic interests are in Spain. If your spouse and minor children live in Spain, the law presumes you are resident too.

As a resident you pay Spanish income tax on your worldwide income. Non-residents only pay on income from Spanish sources.

The Beckham Law for digital nomads

Since 2023, remote workers who move to Spain — including Digital Nomad Visa holders — can opt for the special regime for inbound workers, known as the Beckham Law. You pay a flat 24% on your employment income up to €600,000 a year, and most foreign income that isn't from work is not taxed in Spain.

You must not have been a Spanish tax resident in the previous 5 years, and you must apply within 6 months of registering with Spanish Social Security. Read our full Beckham Law guide.

Freelancers on the Digital Nomad Visa

If you are self-employed, you register as an autónomo with the Tax Agency and Social Security, file quarterly returns and pay income tax on your profits. New autónomos can usually pay a reduced Social Security fee of €80 a month during the first year.

In most cases freelancers do not qualify for the Beckham regime, although some entrepreneurs do. We check your case before you register.

Avoiding double taxation

Spain has tax treaties with the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries. They decide which country can tax each type of income and let you deduct tax paid abroad.

US citizens keep filing US returns while living in Spain; the treaty and foreign tax credits help avoid paying twice. We coordinate with your adviser in your home country when needed.

Your tax calendar in Spain

The annual income tax return (Renta) is filed between April and the end of June for the previous year. Autónomos also file quarterly returns in April, July, October and January.

Beckham Law taxpayers file their own annual return (Form 151). Learn more in our guide to taxes for expats in Spain.

Can Digital Nomad Visa holders use the Beckham Law?

I had an amazing experience working with NIM Extranjería on my student permit extension. I worked with Carmen in particular, and she was absolutely fantastic throughout the entire process. She was always available, incredibly responsive, and provided clear, expert guidance at every step. Her support made what could have been a stressful situation feel smooth and manageable. I highly recommend NIM Extranjería—and especially Carmen—for anyone needing reliable and professional immigration assistance.

I cannot say enough good things about this team! From the very beginning, Carmen has been extremely helpful throughout my entire DNV process, staying on top of all my appointments and always answering my many, many questions quickly. Working with NIM Extranjeria has made this process so much smoother than it ever would have been if I tried handling everything on my own, and I am so appreciative of their service and attention. I would highly recommend working with them!
