Applying from Spain or from your country

If you are in Spain legally — for example as a tourist — you can apply for the residence permit from here. The authorities decide in about 20 working days, and the permit can be granted for up to 3 years, renewable for 2 more.

If you apply from your country through the Spanish consulate, you receive a visa valid for up to 1 year, and then renew it from Spain as a residence permit. Your family can apply at the same time.

Why Digital Nomad Visa applications are refused

In our experience, most refusals come from three problems that can be avoided with good preparation:

Not meeting the minimum income. The income must reach the current threshold and be proven with payslips, contracts or invoices — and it must be enough for each family member who applies with you.

Apostilles and legalisations done wrong. Degrees, criminal records and civil documents must be apostilled or legalised correctly and translated by a sworn translator. A missing apostille can sink a whole application.

Badly drafted employment contracts. The contract or the company letter must clearly state remote work from Spain, the start date of the relationship and the salary. Vague or generic contracts are one of the most common reasons for refusal.

Documents you'll usually need

Passport valid for the whole stay; employment contract or service agreements and a company letter authorising remote work from Spain; proof of the company's activity for at least 1 year; proof of income (payslips, invoices, bank statements); degree or proof of 3 years of experience; criminal record certificates; health insurance; and the Social Security certificate or commitment to register in Spain.

Foreign documents must be apostilled or legalised and, if they are not in Spanish, translated by a sworn translator.

Taxes and Social Security

If you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year, you will usually become a Spanish tax resident. Many digital nomads can opt for the Beckham Law and pay a flat 24% on their employment income for up to six years.

For Social Security, your employer can register in Spain, or — if your country has an agreement with Spain — you can present a certificate of coverage that keeps you in your home system. Our tax and Social Security team sets this up for you.

Additional costs to consider

Besides our fees, plan for the government fees, apostilles of your documents, sworn translations into Spanish and private health insurance for the duration of your stay. We tell you exactly which documents need each step, so you don't pay for anything you don't need.

FAQ

Digital Nomad Visa Spain: FAQ

Can't find your question? Ask us in a call — we'll look at your specific situation.

How much income do I need for the Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?

200% of the Spanish minimum wage: about €2,849 a month (around €34,200 a year) for the main applicant, plus about €1,068 a month for the first family member and €356 for each additional one.

How long does it take?

If you apply from Spain, the authorities usually decide in about 20 working days. From your country, the consulate decides on the visa in about 10 days. Gathering apostilled and translated documents usually takes the longest.

Can I apply from Spain as a tourist?

Yes. If you are in Spain legally, you can apply for the residence permit from here and receive a permit for up to 3 years.

Can I work for Spanish clients?

Employees must work for companies outside Spain. Freelancers can work for Spanish clients, as long as that work is no more than 20% of their total professional activity.

Why are Digital Nomad Visa applications refused?

The most common reasons we see are not meeting the minimum income, apostilles and legalisations done incorrectly, and employment contracts that don't clearly state the remote work conditions.

Can my company continue paying me abroad?

Yes — and we'll make sure it's structured correctly for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa, including Social Security.

Do I have to pay taxes in both countries?

No. Our tax lawyers set up your case with the Beckham Law or double taxation treaty benefits to avoid paying twice.

Why are appointments so hard to get?

Slots open only in small batches — we monitor them and book them on your behalf.

What if my documents aren't ready yet?

We guide you step by step through apostilles, sworn translations and certified copies, so you don't make costly mistakes.

Can my family come with me?

Yes. Your spouse or partner and children can apply with you, showing the additional income required for each of them.

I had an amazing experience working with NIM Extranjería on my student permit extension. I worked with Carmen in particular, and she was absolutely fantastic throughout the entire process. She was always available, incredibly responsive, and provided clear, expert guidance at every step. Her support made what could have been a stressful situation feel smooth and manageable. I highly recommend NIM Extranjería—and especially Carmen—for anyone needing reliable and professional immigration assistance.

I cannot say enough good things about this team! From the very beginning, Carmen has been extremely helpful throughout my entire DNV process, staying on top of all my appointments and always answering my many, many questions quickly. Working with NIM Extranjeria has made this process so much smoother than it ever would have been if I tried handling everything on my own, and I am so appreciative of their service and attention. I would highly recommend working with them!
